Painters Canvas
The base fabric of our painters canvas roll is made up of A grade cotton duck fabrics. Primed canvas is available in 7 oz, 10 oz, #12 (12 ounce) and #8 (18 ounce) cotton duck. Primed Canvas should be purchased slightly wider or longer than the desired size (due to slight residual shrinking).
The priming of the painters canvas allows and provides for a smooth and even surface area for the brush strokes of the artist. This is preferred, and ensures that the colors also remain true.
Please keep in mind all our primed canvas fabrics won’t be primed to edge (width wise). There will always be a section along the edge of the fabric that is unprimed. Priming adds roughly 3 ounces per square yard to the weight of the fabric.

Painter’s Canvas for Artists
A 10 oz painters canvas is a 10 oz single filled duck canvas that has been primed and now weighs roughly 13 oz/ square yard. Therefore, all our painters canvas except #8 cotton duck is used for stretching, but the most popular ones would be the 7 oz and the 10 oz canvas.
To clarify, #12 and #10 artist canvas are used for murals and backdrops. They are sturdier and more durable and can be taken down, rolled up, and easily transported to a new location with little hassle. #8 duck artist canvas is primarily used for floorcloths, table mats, and runners. Painters canvas drop cloth uses are quite varied, as this canvas drop cloth is created to handle heavy duty home improvement projects and any paint. Made from 100% cotton duck canvas fabric, this canvas protects floors, carpets, furniture and equipment. Customers love this material as it absorbs paint spills, and also traps dust/ debris for quick clean-up. The heavy-duty rot-resistant thread ensures that this canvas drop cloth is washable and reusable, and is made to last!

Shipping on our pre-primed canvas is slightly higher if 4 yards or less is purchased at the time of your order (see quantity discounts below). Painting canvas usually has various textures and surfaces depending on the amount of gesso applied to the fabric.
Markedly, the lighter weight 7 oz and 10 canvas usually have a rougher texture when compared to the #12, #10 and #8 duck fabrics. We can also custom slit on-demand your pre-primed canvas into custom widths for art and craft projects (custom squares, etc…).
Pre-slit primed canvas has been used to manufacture canvas boards. Generally, once the fabric has been slit to width, our customers cut it to length and glue it to the boards. Overall, our primed canvas can be used with acrylics, watercolor and oil paints.
Priming for Oil Color
Priming your canvas will ensure that your colors really pop and stand out. This is done by applying a layer or two of gesso to the surface first and initially before painting. When using oil colors on the primed artist canvas, the oil may sink into the canvas and might leave dull patches on the surface of your painting, but only if the primed artist canvas is poorly primed. Priming allows your brush to move and flow better on the surface, as it provides a much smooth surface area than unprimed artist canvas. This is an artist’s preference.
Priming for Acrylic Color
Priming a canvas is also a very good idea to do when you are using acrylic paints, and not just oil-based paints. This ensures a solid and smooth foundation for your painting and brush strokes.
5 ideas to consider when priming:
1. Absorbency: Priming limits the paint absorbency of the canvas and ensures the adhesion of the paint film to the primed canvas surface.
2. Tooth: The Tooth is how the canvas surface feels to the touch. The more tooth a surface area has, the rougher it feels to touch. The primed surface needs to provide a necessary grip for the color.
3. Rigidity: Primers add significant rigidity. This aids and compliments the intrinsic nature of the paint film and thus, ensures long term stability of the paint to the canvas fabric.
4. Color: The relationship of the color of your primed surface to the colors you use in your work is important to consider. Oils are known to become increasingly transparent with the passing of time, and an opaque primed, white surface will reflect back the maximum amount of light. Paintings can indeed become brighter over time.
5. Coverage: The primed coverage needs to be adequate for the intended purpose. 1 or 2 coats of a good, high quality primer should be generally sufficient.
