The Start of Cornhole Bags
Like horseshoes, cornhole bags have a bit of a murky start. Many people claim its roots were from the game Quoits. Quoits, which was basically the original version of the game horseshoe, was a game first played in ancient Greece!
The Greek weren’t the only group playing quoits, however. Roman soldiers brought the game back from battles and it spread throughout Europe. It was immensely popular in England.
This game play occurred with metal discs usually made from steel. Distances were set along with point values on who could throw the metal disc through a pin in the ground with the most accuracy. There are many variations of how to play the corn hole game. However, there are a traditional set of rules surrounding the game itself. In this game, you have two boards and two sets of four bags.
The boards are made from wood and have a hole cut in the top middle of the board. This board lays on an elevated angle. The object of the game is to get as many points by placing the bags within the hole or on top of the board.
The game of Cornhole plays with either 1 or two people per side. The regulation distance apart is 27 feet expanse from the base of the boards. If a player crosses the end of the board, it’s considered a foul.

If you’re playing one on one, each player attempts to sink their set of cornhole bags in the hole for three points, or on top of the board for one point each. If a bag slides or knocks into the hole by another bag, that’s also worth three points.
After each team plays, the inning is over. Cornhole works in intervals of innings similar to baseball or softball. When played with two people, each person has their set of four bags for game-play.

Terminology Used During Cornhole Bag Games
There’re other sets of rules and regulations regarding the point system of Cornhole, and also terminology. Essentially, the game is a bean bags toss competition, with a few rules to abide by. Some popular terms you may hear when playing a cornhole bag game are:
Ace/Cow Pie: This refers to a bag landing on the board. When a bag lands on the board, it’s worth one point.
Blocker: A bag that will land directly in front of the hole on the board.
Hooker: A bag that lands in the hole, despite there being a bag blocking the entrance of the hole (blocker).
Jumper: When a bag hits another bag that’s already on the board and allows for it to land inside the hole.
Police: Nickname given to the referee of the game.
Shotgun: When a player throws all four of his or her bags at the same time.
Wash: When each team scores the same within an inning, cancelling out each team’s points for said inning.
Bag sets: what is used and tossed to accrue points and to deflect your competitor’s cornhole bag sets.
Bean bags toss: essentially how the game is played and how points are added up through the tossing of the cornhole bags set.
These terms and many more make the game of Cornhole that much more fun. As previously mentioned, apart from the terminology, there is also another important component to the scoring of Cornhole overall: cancellation.
When you’re playing cornhole, the object is to obtain as many points as you can within the inning. The other person’s points count against your own. After the inning plays out, the points become totaled on each side and each person’s points cancel the others out.
For example, if you’ve sunk all of your bags in the hole, that would be 12 points. Your opponent manages to sink three of their bags and had one on the board for a total of 10 points. Their 10 points subtracted from your 12 leave you in the lead by 2 points.

Cornhole 13: This game has only one goal in mind– sink as many bags in the hole as possible! Board tosses do not count in this version of Cornhole; sinking your bags directly into the hole is what earns you points.
Far Toss: With each inning of Cornhole played, each person or team will move back farther and father. Use tape or paint to create lines where each player will have to toss their bags from!
Bozo Buckets: This one is perfect for kids! Similar to far toss, you’ll move back each turn and try to sink your bag into the hole. Start from the front of the board, moving your way back instead of like in far toss where you start from the back and move backwards.
